Week #5-Netlibrary

1. In searching for Columbus Day, I found 3 books. With the books it gave published information as well as price to buy the book. I do not totally understand this site. Do you buy the book and then you own a ecopy of it, or do you borrow the book? I could see this being helpful to find the titles/publishers to books, but I don't foresee a lot of use in our classrooms if we have to purchase the books.

2. In searching for Constitution Day, I found a total of 9 books. A couple of them were Jury Nullifications and Reasonable Doubt, and Beyond a Reasonable Doubt.

3. I was not able to access the publisher's box without a password and user name. I tried what I had, but did not work. This site is much hard to use then the other ones. I do not see much use for this in my classroom.

  1. Denise, I am completely perplexed with your results and wonder how you are searching. I recreated your searches in full-text search and got over 800 results for Columbus Day and over 1,000 results for Constitution Day--not all of which are applicable, certainly. These are full-text online books to borrow. To read the book, click "View this ebook" under the summary of the book you'd like to view. To do a publisher search, you should not have to enter a password/user name. Sometimes a strange NetLibrary screen shows up if you've closed out and then reenter. In that case, you need to close your browser window & start over. Anyway, click "Advanced Search" in the upper right corner of the home page. One of the default search boxes on the screen that appears is publisher. In that box, enter either "Oklahoma" or "Nebraska," and you should get good results for Western history. I'm sorry you had so much difficulty with this resource. I hope you'll give it another try. Please contact Julie (julie.erickson@state.sd.us) or me (jane.healy@state.sd.us) by email if you would like more assistance. Thanks for reporting.

  2. Hi, Denise, I've looked into this further with Julie. We believe you used the wrong "doorway" to get to NetLibrary, thus leading to your completely frustrating situation. Please enter from the alphabetical list on the State Library page. That is the doorway to all our electronic resources and not entering that way does not yield good search results. So sorry!
